Car Glut Debilitates Chinese Car Industry. Now Wait Until You Get to Detroit

Two days ago, Bloomberg brought harrowing news: “Chinese dealers are struggling with the rising number of unsold cars that’s threatening to deepen price cuts. Dealerships for Honda Motor Co., Chery Automobile Co., BYD Co. and Geely carried more than 45 days of inventory as of the end of April, exceeding the threshold that foreshadows debilitating price cuts.” Automotive News made the matter...

Junkyard Find: 1983 BMW 320i

Between the old-timey 2002 and the hugely influential E30, there was the E21. Over in Yurp, BMW shoppers could buy 315s and 316s and 323s and I don’t know what all, but here in North America we know the E21 almost exclusively via the good old 320i. The 2002 overlapped E21 production by a couple of years; likewise, BMW showrooms in 1983 held the final examples of the 320i side-by-side with the...

The Duel

In the summer of 1989, I was ten going on eleven. The fastest car I had yet ridden in was probably my dad’s 535i, clocked by the CHiP at well over the tonne, a ticket which the patriarch of the family talked himself out of with a “Not bad, right?” It was hard to say if I really cared about cars yet: obviously they were important to my dad, and I’d already learned to drive our Series...

Car Collector’s Corner:1974 Valiant Brougham With a Long Family History Gets a New Lease on Life

When you see an immaculate 1974 Valiant four door sedan at a car show, one thing is very clear: There is a story behind this car. Few people would restore one of these dependable Mopar compacts from the 70s unless there was a good reason. Lorne and Pat Dawes own one of the nicest 1974 Valiants we have ever seen and they have a family legacy with this little Plymouth. It took a few hours to track down...

40 Years of the M Series – a Pictorial History. Chapter 2

In the first chapter, we watched how BMW’s in-house motorsports department morphed into a separate company, that soon made its own cars. 16 years later …. In 1988, the BMW M5 saw its second generation. The straight-six was pumped up to 3.8 liters, its power rose to 340 hp. To confuse people, the engines dropped the “M” in their internal production code. The M was replaced by an S. To more than...

The UAW’s Recipe Against Losses: Spend Some More

It’s said that people do resemble their dogs. The UAW surely looks more and more like the GM of old. For years, the UAW has spent more than it took, forcing it to live off its savings. Once again, the UAW wants to change this – two years from now. Until then, it will happily go on making losses. Said Bob King to Reuters: “We are spending a lot of money, and we’re investing money in...

Massachusetts Right to Repair Law Left Senate

The Right to Repair law winds its way through the Massachusetts legislature. The law was approved in the Senate last week, says the AP via Businessweek The law now heads to the House of Representatives. If that sounds like deja vu to you, then your memory is excellent. The bill previously passed the Senate in 2010, but failed to come up in the House. A nationwide bill lingers somewhere in Washington,...

Ford Focus Electric Car en Route to Dealers. Good Luck

This weekend, Ford will put its first Focus EVs on car carriers and ship them to dealers, Reuters heard.  Some 67 dealers in California, New Jersey and New York will receive 350 Electrics. Each dealer will get about six cars, one of which will be a demonstration model, the other for sale, Reuters’ sources said. Ford did not want to comment on these enormous news. Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood...

Some Japanese Are Taking That Kei Car Thing a Bit Too Far

An obviously Axis-inspired driver was seen today in Kamakura, Japan, complete with aloha shirt and toy poodle. A British crime writer who stood next to me swore up and down  that this is the real thing and an original Messerschmitt Kabinenroller. What do you think? I think this is too slick a fiberglass replica of the Messerschmitt. The real McMesserschmitt had three wheels instead of four, and the...

Who Wore It Better: Sarkozy or Hollande? [Citroen Edition]

Francois Hollande has officially been sworn in as France’s new head of state, and as expected, his official car is a Citroen DS5 Hybrid4. But his predecessor may have one-upped the upstart Socialist with a choice ride of his own. Leaving the Elysee Palace in defeat may be tough to do – less tough when Carla Bruni is the one escorting you to your new residence. But outgoing PM Nicolas...
